Isla Xalajá
Boutique Hotel, Marina and Spanish School

Isla Xalaja

Welcome to Isla Xalaja located in an exotic island setting on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala where the Rio Dulce joins the Rio Rosul. In the jungle is where you will find bungalows tucked away in the mangroves, two beautiful casa’s, a boutique marina and a Spanish School.

On Isla Xalaja we have a restaurant serving some of the best food in Rio Dulce. For those sailing to Guatemala a friendly home awaits you at a marina catering to the live aboard sailor with the amenities you expect and deserve.

On Xalaja (pronounced sha-la-ha) you will see orchids hang in perennial bloom and gaze in awe as a Jesus Christ lizard walks on water going from one mangrove to another.

Over the last couple of years the rebuilding and upgrades that have gone into Isla Xalaja have been a labor of love but none as special as Casa Pitaya. From the start of the project more than two years ago we have rebuilt casa Pitaya from the ground up. The team here at Isla Xalaja never thought about the green initiatives we were putting in place. However, upon completion we realized we had something extremely special on our hands. Casa Pitaya is Eco-friendly and Green because it made sense and was the right thing to do and that we are very proud of.

Take a look around:

• All lights inside and out of Casa Pitaya are low wattage CFL thus saving on the electrical bill
• The bar top table in the kitchen is made from a reclaimed teak swim platform found in a trash pile on the property.
• Large windows throughout the casa were installed which saved us on building materials and the benefit is the increase in air flow and light
• The upstairs bathroom floor is laid in reclaimed hard woods from dock boards that were rotting away
• Casa Pitaya is decorated with local mayan crafts and furniture
• We have planted banana trees, Papaya trees, coconut palms and pepper plants. The fruits are all used
• Over 50 mangrove seedlings were planted for erosion
• The upstairs wall is made from bamboo from Don Emillos El Circote. I urge you to read the article on this man and the wonders he has performed in the jungle. http://riodulcechisme.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=436&Itemid=35

Keep a close eye out for the grand opening of our new restaurant on Isla Xalaja. There have been a lot of positive changes this year to our little island paradise. The new restaurant will be another. We are very excited about being able to offer our hotel and marina guests along with all of our friends on the Rio a fresh atmosphere, wonderful food, great service and a fun time.

The new washrooms and shower facilities for our marina and restaurant guests are completed. They consist of two separate building, one for women and the other for men, each with it's own amenities.

In addition the new workshop is now complete as well. This will give the boaters a place to work in an organized manner on all those never ending projects.
